Top 5 TV Shows We Can REALLY Learn From

1) HOUSE:
Hugh Laurie stars as House, the teaching hospital's secret weapon. Unexplained illnesses and ridiculous and interesting medical complaints all find their way to Houses diagnostics department. To find the answers to these crazy medical mysteries the diagnostic team often go to the patients homes to investigate (really not advisable - this isn't the bit we can learn from!). The show follows a very predictable format in each episode, BUT.... the medical information and the depth of the characters and their relationships in this show make it a truly wonderful and educational experience! Aside from general medical knowledge, Hugh Laurie's character in particular, allows us to learn about addiction, chronic pain and his own, but often self-denied people skills and social issues. This is perhaps why in 2008 House was the most watched TV show around the world.

2) MYTHBUSTERS
This comical but highly scientific TV program sees the Mythbuster's team testing ... you guessed it! Myths! They do this to see if they are in fact, true of false. The program is highly educational and supposedly supplies as much fun watching the presenters trying to set up experiments as factual knowledge!

3) TIME WARP
Continuing with the scientific theme, Time warp show events such as bubbles popping in slow motion! Weird, until you realise the point behind it. The idea is that it allows the presenters to slow down, and actually show and explain the scientific process happening that would normally take place too quickly to see in the real world.

4) ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK
OK, SO THIS IS NOT A SHOW YOU WOULD EXPECT TO LEARN FROM. But this show tackles some real social issues. Ones that were not talked about much in mainstream TV until Orange Is The New Black came out. To see a movie about lesbians, you would have had to search for dodgy underfunded and low scale promoted movies in a 'gay' category on a dark corner of the web. But not any more this highly recognizable series puts same sex relationships in the spot light. Prison culture and that idea that prisoners are not just criminals, but people with lives, emotions and back stories are also things that are hugely represented in this series. Who knew from a chic flick series you could learn so much!

5) CBS SPORTS NETWORK
Again not an obvious candidate! However, watching not just CBS Sports Network, but sport and commentary in general, is really meant to be great for your health and social skills! So, even if you're not keen on sports, but are a bit socially anxious, watching a quick round up of a game could give you the common talking material needed to strike up those conversations with people. For those who really are interested in sports, regular viewing can apparently help subconsciously with your own sporting skills, motivation and frame of mind. Want to know more about this? Look up the psychology of social learning theory guys (the idea we learn behaviors and actions through imitation)!

If you are celebrating a birthday this month of August, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
