Any spoilers? Yes! Although released in October 2019, the Walt Disney dark fantasy movie Maleficent: Mistress of Evil will be causing a buzz for many months, and maybe years, to come! Maleficent 2 is a sequel from the 2014 movie Maleficent and stars actors Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Imelda Staunton, Sam Riley and Juno Temple. As kids, so many of us grew up with tales of different Disney characters like Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, and many others. And over the years as Disney remade each fairy tale, we all expected a Sleeping Beauty movie. Surprisingly, instead of the story of Aurora as told in the storybooks, we were given Maleficent! The tale of the villain who we’ve all believed to be hateful and vengeful towards Aurora. The first movie Maleficent was told from the villain’s point of view and with Angelina Jolie as the iconic villain, Disney fans were ecstatic. Now Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is out and it has lots of mixed reviews. Maleficent 2 just like the original movie has a monotonous and predictable story line. Fortunately, the amazing graphics and dramatic performances make up for this! In the Mistress of Evil the characters face a worse villain than Maleficent. A villain whose actions affect the fate of Aurora and the prince. A brief look at the plot Maleficent: Mistress of Evil surrounds Maleficent’s effort to fit into Aurora’s world –for the sake of Aurora (Elle Fanning). It turns out to be quite difficult because unlike Aurora, so many others, Phillip (Harris Dickinson) and Ingrith (his mother) included, doubt Maleficent’s goodness. Maleficent is then goaded by Ingrith to take some actions that indeed cause her accusers to believe they were right and she was indeed still evil. Chased away, Maleficent meets other mystical creatures she never knew existed and finds out she a Dark Phoenix Fey. Together Maleficent and the other fairies work together to fight against the humans working together to annihilate their kind. Just like the original movie, there aren’t any jaw-dropping plot twists in the sequel. It is straightforward and without surprises, which for most viewers is a bit disappointing. Music We all know that music is a very important element in Disney movies and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil score did not disappoint in this aspect. Geoff Zanelli did a great job composing the movie’s soundtrack “You Can’t Stop the Girl”, amongst other songs. Zanelli was beyond pleased with the movie and shared that writing the movie’s score was an honor. If you’ve watched the movie, surely you’d agree that he has reasons to be pleased with his input! Once again, Angelina Jolie remains an interesting and fascinating character in Maleficent. Her high cheekbones give her character the fierce tenacious look and her lovely face shows us that almost-sweet side of Maleficent. In this movie we see a bit of Maleficent’s playful side, making it possible for viewers to relate with the character a bit more! Despite its drawbacks, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is a worthy cinema movie with its great visuals and acting performances. Be safe in your travels and thank you for reading and for your support.
