Ed Mehler: Still Chasing the Laughs and the Dream

Ed’s story starts early. He’s been hooked on performing since he was eight, but if you let him tell it, he’s been getting laughs since the very first breath—he claims his delivery room debut got a chuckle out of the doctor. That sense of humor? Still going strong. 

But it’s not all punchlines and bright lights. Off camera, Ed’s a single dad who raised two remarkable daughters—his proudest role by far—and the devoted human to Bella, a Jack Russell who’s been his sidekick for a decade. Family isn’t just important to Ed; it’s the whole point. “Making people laugh is one of my greatest joys,” he says, and you believe him. It’s not a sound bite for the press, but more of a mission statement for how he moves through the world. 

His first big break came in 1985, when he landed a spot on CBS’s Airwolf. You’d think that would be a career highlight, but if you ask him for his favorite memory, he doesn’t even pause: working with Steven Spielberg on The Goonies still tops everything else. Since then, Ed’s made appearances in a string of short films that have found their way into festivals across the U.S. and overseas—each one another step in a career that’s never stopped moving forward. 

“I’m still a sponge,” Ed says. “Every day I learn something new from my fellow actors and the amazing people in this business.” He’s a proud card-carrying member of SAG-AFTRA, always searching for ways to stretch his skills—comedy, drama, horror, you name it. “If I stay ready, I don’t have to get ready,” he adds, crediting ongoing acting classes for keeping him on his toes and hungry for more.
